Resolving Our Water Woes

The preservation of water resources includes protection of raw water resources, efficient management of rivers, ensuring water needs of flora and fauna are met and ensuring that water catchments are gazetted as permanent reserves.

He also stressed that managing surface water, which was mostly rivers, was vital as it contributed to almost 95% of raw water resources for consumption.
“The protection for these resources is still lacking in Malaysia. For example, Sungai Labu which is a combination of Sungai Batang Nilai and Sungai Batang Labu, is subjected to pollution from industries, commercial activities and individual septic tanks.
“This river is the raw water intake source for the Salak Tinggi Water Treatment Plant in Selangor.

SHAH ALAM, March 9 (Bernama) -- The Parit 4 Sekinchan Umno Youth branch chief on Tuesday filed a RM5 million defamation suit against Sinar Harian newspaper for portraying him as living in poverty.

Mohd Yazid Bai, 40, named Sinar Harian publisher Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn Bhd (Karangkraf) and seven others as defendants for publishing a defamatory article on Nov 20, 2009.

The others are printer Akhbar Cabaran Sdn Bhd, Karangkraf chief executive officer Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub, group chief editor Abd Jalil Ali, group editor Sri Diah, news editor Azmi Tarmizi, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur bureau editor Lailatun Khalilah Nasir and reporter Nurul Huda Saiyuti.

The writ was filed by counsel Muhd Azmi Talib of Azmi Talib & Associates at the Civil High Court registrar's office here on Tuesday.

Mohd Yazid said the article which appeared in Sinar Harian under the headline "Umno Prihatin Nasib Rakyat Daif" based on a gotong-royong organised by Tanjong Karang Umno Youth was false as he was never interviewed by the reporter.

The article quoted Mohd Yazid as thanking Umno for helping to repair his house and claimed that he was poor and qualified to receive aid.

He is claiming RM5 million as compensation, apology in the front page of the newspaper, RM20,000 legal fees and other costs as the article had caused him emotional stress, loss of income and reputation.

    No to Local Council Elections?

Putrajaya not keen to restore third vote

    By Adib Zalkapli
PUTRAJAYA, March 9 — The Federal government is not interested to restore local council elections as it will not necessarily improve public services, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The Prime Minister was responding to the move by the Selangor and Penang governments to get the Election Commission (EC) to conduct local government elections in the two states.
“We are of the opinion that the local government elections were abolished long time ago, so there is no need to restore it,” said Najib.
Local government elections were first held in 1951 before Merdeka but abolished in 1965 during the Confrontation with Indonesia.
The then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman promised it would be restored after the situation improved.

The Middle Ground: The brewing storm of GST

"Think of it this way. Everybody knows whatever form of additional taxation is what most sitting governments would avoid unless it is absolutely necessary because of the backlash from the electorate. Did you know that when Canada introduced GST in 1991, the government was brought down at the following general elections in 1993? The political party who introduced GST in Canada eventually disbanded in 2004!"
