For every £ they are paid, tax accountants destroy £47, waste recyclers generate £12

The research, carried out by think tank the New Economics Foundation, says hospital cleaners create £10 of value for every £1 they are paid. It claims bankers are a drain on the country because of the damage they caused to the global economy. They reportedly destroy £7 of value for every £1 they earn.

Meanwhile, senior advertising executives are said to "create stress". The study says they are responsible for campaigns which create dissatisfaction and misery, and encourage over-consumption. And tax accountants damage the country by devising schemes to cut the amount of money available to the government, the research suggests. By contrast, child minders and waste recyclers are also doing jobs that create net wealth to the country.

The Foundation has used a new form of job evaluation to calculate the total contribution various jobs make to society, including for the first time the impact on communities and environment. Eilis Lawlor, spokeswoman for the New Economics Foundation, said: "Pay levels often don't reflect the true value that is being created. As a society, we need a pay structure which rewards those jobs that create most societal benefit rather than those that generate profits at the expense of society and the environment". She said the aim of the research was not to target individuals in highly paid jobs, or suggest people in low paid jobs should earn more. "The point we are making is more fundamental - that there should be a relationship between what we are paid and the value our work generates for society. We've found a way to calculate that," she said.

A total of six different jobs were analysed to assess their overall value. These are the study's main findings:

* The elite banker -- "Rather than being wealth creators bankers are being handsomely rewarded for bringing the global financial system to the brink of collapse Paid between £500,000 and £80m a year, leading bankers destroy £7 of value for every pound they generate".

* Childcare workers -- "Both for families and society as a whole, looking after children could not be more important. As well as providing a valuable service for families, they release earnings potential by allowing parents to continue working. For every pound they are paid they generate up to £9.50 worth of benefits to society."

* Hospital cleaners -- "Play a vital role in the workings of healthcare facilities. They not only clean hospitals and maintain hygiene standards but also contribute to wider health outcomes. For every pound paid, over £10 in social value is created."

* Advertising executives -- The industry "encourages high spending and indebtedness. It can create insatiable aspirations, fuelling feelings of dissatisfaction, inadequacy and stress. For a salary of between £50,000 and £12m top advertising executives destroy £11 of value for every pound in value they generate".

* Tax accountants -- "Every pound that a tax accountant saves a client is a pound which otherwise would have gone to HM Revenue. For a salary of between £75,000 and £200,000, tax accountants destroy £47 in value, for every pound they generate."

* Waste recycling workers -- "Do a range of different jobs that relate to processing and preventing waste and promoting recycling. Carbon emissions are significantly reduced. There is also a value in reusing goods. For every pound of value spent on wages, £12 of value is generated for society."

The research also makes a variety of policy recommendations to align pay more closely with the value of work. These include establishing a high pay commission, building social and environmental value into prices, and introducing more progressive taxation.

Going nuts in your diet may cut cholesterol

    May 14, 2010

WASHINGTON, May 14 — Going nuts in your diet can be good for your health, according to a study published Monday, which showed that eating nuts helps to lower blood cholesterol levels.

People who ate an average of 67g of nuts a day saw a 5.1 per cent fall in total cholesterol concentration and a 7.4 per cent drop in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) — sometimes referred to as bad cholesterol — concentration compared to no-nut eaters, the study showed.

People with high triglyceride levels who ate nuts saw a 10.2 per cent fall in those blood lipid levels, said the study, which analysed data from 25 trials conducted in seven countries, involving 583 men and women aged 19-86 with high or normal cholesterol levels.

All the trial data that were analysed for the study compared nut-eaters to a control group that did not eat nuts. None of the participants were taking medication to lower their blood lipids.

Researchers led by Dr Joan Sabate of Loma Linda University in California found in the study published Monday in the American Medical Association’s Archives of Internal Medicine that the benefits to health were the same no matter what nut is eaten.

A person’s weight and baseline LDL cholesterol levels did, however, influence whatever benefits might be derived from eating nuts.

The higher the starting LDL-C, the greater the cholesterol-lowering effects of nuts, the study found.

And the lower a patient’s body mass index — in other words, if the patient was not overweight or obese — the greater the effects of nuts on lowering cholesterol levels, the study found, urging more research to determine why nuts are less effective in lowering the blood cholesterol levels of obese people.

A person’s diet also played a role in the effect nuts have on blood cholesterol levels.

Consumers of Western diets, which are high in saturated fat, got more benefits from nut-eating than those who already ate a healthy diet, high in monounsaturated olive oil, fish and fresh fruit and vegetables, the study found.

And there’s more good news: the data analysed for the study showed that the benefits of eating nuts remain with us for a long time; that nut consumption appears to reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes; and, in spite of their high fat content, nuts don’t necessarily make us fat.

“Research has shown that frequent nut consumption does not lead to weight gain,” said the study.

“Increasing the consumption of nuts as part of an otherwise prudent diet can be expected to favourably affect blood lipid levels... and have the potential to lower coronary heart disease risk,” it concluded. — AFP/Relaxnews

Whale poo could help oceans absorb CO2, scientists say

SYDNEY, April 23 — Whale droppings have emerged as a natural ocean fertiliser which could help combat global warming by allowing the Southern Ocean to absorb more carbon dioxide, Australian scientists have have found.

New research from the Australian Antarctic Division suggests whales naturally fertilise surface waters with iron-rich whale excrement, allowing the whole eco-system to send more carbon down into deep waters.

The plants love it and it actually becomes a way of taking carbon out of the atmosphere,” Antarctic scientist Steve Nicol told Reuters, adding the droppings appear as a plume of solids and liquids.

A larger population of baleen whales and krill would boost the productivity of the whole Southern Ocean ecosystem and could improve the absorption of carbon dioxide, blamed for global warming.

Iron is a limited micronutrient in the Southern Ocean, but recent experiments have found that adding soluble iron to surface waters helps promote much-needed phytoplankton algal blooms.

Iron is contained in algae in the surface waters where plants grow, but there is a constant rain of iron-rich particles falling into deep waters.

When krill eat the algae, and whales eat the krill, the iron ends up in whale poo, and the iron levels are kept up in surface waters where it is most needed.

“We reckon whale poo is probably 10 million times more concentrated with iron than sea water,” Nicol said.

“The system operates at a high level when you have this interaction between the krill, the whales and the algae and they maintain the system at a very high level of production. So it’s a self sustaining system.”

Nicol said the idea to research whale droppings came from a casual pub chat among Antarctic scientists in Australia’s island state of Tasmania.

He said it was not yet known how much poo it would take have a significant impact on the Southern Ocean. — Reuters

"Kim Jong-Il mode which is now spreading expeditiously worldwide is something unprecedented in the world's history," the stylist was quoted as saying.
The suits consist of an overall-style zipped-up tunic and matching trousers, usually in khaki or blueish-grey.

The preservation of water resources includes protection of raw water resources, efficient management of rivers, ensuring water needs of flora and fauna are met and ensuring that water catchments are gazetted as permanent reserves.

He also stressed that managing surface water, which was mostly rivers, was vital as it contributed to almost 95% of raw water resources for consumption.
“The protection for these resources is still lacking in Malaysia. For example, Sungai Labu which is a combination of Sungai Batang Nilai and Sungai Batang Labu, is subjected to pollution from industries, commercial activities and individual septic tanks.
“This river is the raw water intake source for the Salak Tinggi Water Treatment Plant in Selangor.

SHAH ALAM, March 9 (Bernama) -- The Parit 4 Sekinchan Umno Youth branch chief on Tuesday filed a RM5 million defamation suit against Sinar Harian newspaper for portraying him as living in poverty.

Mohd Yazid Bai, 40, named Sinar Harian publisher Kumpulan Karangkraf Sdn Bhd (Karangkraf) and seven others as defendants for publishing a defamatory article on Nov 20, 2009.

The others are printer Akhbar Cabaran Sdn Bhd, Karangkraf chief executive officer Datuk Hussamuddin Yaacub, group chief editor Abd Jalil Ali, group editor Sri Diah, news editor Azmi Tarmizi, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur bureau editor Lailatun Khalilah Nasir and reporter Nurul Huda Saiyuti.

The writ was filed by counsel Muhd Azmi Talib of Azmi Talib & Associates at the Civil High Court registrar's office here on Tuesday.

Mohd Yazid said the article which appeared in Sinar Harian under the headline "Umno Prihatin Nasib Rakyat Daif" based on a gotong-royong organised by Tanjong Karang Umno Youth was false as he was never interviewed by the reporter.

The article quoted Mohd Yazid as thanking Umno for helping to repair his house and claimed that he was poor and qualified to receive aid.

He is claiming RM5 million as compensation, apology in the front page of the newspaper, RM20,000 legal fees and other costs as the article had caused him emotional stress, loss of income and reputation.

      No to Local Council Elections?

Putrajaya not keen to restore third vote

      By Adib Zalkapli
PUTRAJAYA, March 9 — The Federal government is not interested to restore local council elections as it will not necessarily improve public services, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The Prime Minister was responding to the move by the Selangor and Penang governments to get the Election Commission (EC) to conduct local government elections in the two states.
“We are of the opinion that the local government elections were abolished long time ago, so there is no need to restore it,” said Najib.
Local government elections were first held in 1951 before Merdeka but abolished in 1965 during the Confrontation with Indonesia.
The then Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman promised it would be restored after the situation improved.

FOMCA: Develop Both Urban And Rural Public Transporation

PETALING JAYA, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca) today called on the government to develop the urban and rural public transportation systems simultenously to achieve substantial savings on fuel subsidy.

So far, the government had only unveiled the programme to improve the urban public transportation system and had been quiet on the rural sector, said its president, Datuk N. Marimuthu.

He said that in some rural areas there was no public transportation at all and even if there was, it was with irregular timing with old buses and taxis.

He told Bernama that at present only 20 per cent of Malaysians were using public transportation because of irregular timing, insufficient buses and trains and generally poor service.

In the next 10 years or so, if 50 per cent of Malaysia could use public transportation, the country could gain tremendously by reducing carbon dioxide emmision and traffic congestion and saving in fuel subsidy, he added.

He suggested a cross-subsidy to operate public transportation, where the more profitable urban sector could subsidise the rural areas, and urged the government to study the models available in the world, especially Japan's and Singapore's systems, to come up with a suitable one for Malaysia.

Hassles, congestion and extra costs to come with new fuel subsidy scheme

PETALING JAYA: The Petrol Dealers Asso-ciation of Malaysia has expressed concern that the new fuel subsidy system which uses MyKad for petrol purchase may create hassles for consumers.

The association is worried that the system could cause congestion apart from burdening petrol dealers with additional costs.

Association president Datuk Hashim Othman said a bank had been appointed to manage the operation of the new fuel subsidy scheme and consumers might have to register their car registration number through the bank or petrol stations using MyKad.

He anticipated that it would take a longer time to process transactions as biometrics would be used to verify the vehicle owner’s identity through thumbprint scanning and this could lead to possible congestion at the petrol stations.

“Experts in the field may say it is applicable but people on the ground are worried that the thumbprint scan, which is similar to the practice in the airport, may delay transactions and create congestion at petrol stations,” he told The Star yesterday.

How many friends can you have?

British anthropologist Robin Dunbar says human beings can have no more than 150 friends – that’s the upper limit the brain can absorb.

His conclusion comes from studying the social group size of monkeys and apes and how that size might relate to the brain.

Initially Dunbar was examining why primates groom each other. If the reason involved sexual bonding, it should correspond to “the social brain hypothesis” that the reason primates have a large brain is because of their social complexity.

In other words, you need a large brain to keep track of your relationships. Humans, he says, are no different.

Known as “Dunbar’s number,” the idea of an upper limit to friends is bound to cause some people – especially teens and young adults -- to raise their eyebrows, particularly in this era of social network sites where some people boast of having thousands of friends.

Dua ketul enjin Sukhoi pulak "kehilangan"?

Two more RMAF jet engines 'lost'

      Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 13:33:00

PETALING JAYA: Two more fighter jet engines were "lost" by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in 2007, apart from the two F5 engines that were stolen from its Sungai Besi air base.

The other two engines "lost" belonged to a newly-delivered Sukhoi Su-30MKM Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA). The aircraft suffered "foreign object damage" (FOD), as it goes in air force lingo, after its engines sucked in stones and other objects as it landed in June 2007.

Sources said the two NPO Saturn AL-31FP engines were scrapped after suffering "catastrophic damage" when the brand-new Sukhoi jet landed on the runway at the Gong Kedak air base in Kelantan.

However, RMAF chief Datuk Seri Rodzali Daud told The Malay Mail at Parliament recently that the engines were not scrapped but sent for repair.

He declined to elaborate, but did say that FOD was a normal occurrence in fighter jet operations. If the engines could be repaired, they would have been sent back to the Russian manufacturer, NPO Saturn.

Although the Sukhoi planes were equipped with titanium mesh doors that swing down over the air intake to protect the engines from FOD, the feature only worked during take-off and slow taxiing, not during landing.

Local defence industry sources who confirmed that the damaged engines were "lost" said it was difficult to estimate the cost of a brand new AL-31FP engine. The Sukhois cost the country RM155 million each and the government purchased 18 Su-30MKM from Russia in May 2003 at a cost of RM3.42 billion.

The Malay Mail learnt that the aircraft in the FOD incident was not grounded for long as the RMAF, as with other air forces, had procured spare engines for its Sukhoi fleet.

The sources said the Sukhoi was one of five fighter jets delivered in batches from May 2007.

These were transported from Russia to the Subang airbase in Antonov An-124 transport planes and re-assembled for trials before being handed over to the RMAF.

It is learnt that the damaged Sukhoi jet was flown by a Sukhoi Design Bureau test crew when the incident occurred, and that RMAF had initially demanded that the Russian company replaces the two engines.

However, Sukhoi refused on grounds that the test crew was only following the orders of RMAF officials to land at the Gong Kedak air base. The runway had been cleared for other RMAF aircraft such as the Hercules C-130 but at that point, the Sukhois had yet to be given the greenlight to land.

The Gong Kedak base had undergone massive re-development to host the new MRCA squadron.

More than RM200 million was spent to re-develop the air base, which now boasts an extended runway and new facilities, including hardened aircraft shelters for the Sukhoi squadron.

Although the incident was a clear violation of RMAF standing orders, no one has been hauled up over the loss of the two engines.

The Sukhoi made its public debut in the country at the 2007 Merdeka Day parade and the jets also took part in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace show in December that year.
